This is meant to give you an introduction into JLime and the general concept of Linux on handhelds. First off let me congratulate you on you decision to put a powerful operating system on your handheld, Im sure you will find it alot more useful than your current Wince.
Whats the point? On old machines support will sooner or later disappear leaving you with an aging machine without the possibility to interact with changing environments. In general companies will give out updates for their systems (wince) for a couple of years after the termination of the machine, but once they stop you have no way to produce those needed upgrades yourself. So, as time goes by your machine grows more and more obsolete.
Now if you wanna keep up with the gadget frenzy you could always buy a fresh machine and start all over. Or, you could change to an alternative. Myself I've never found a machine i liked so much and I would very much like to keep using it for awhile longer.
Benefits of using JLime/Linux on your HP Jornada The real benefit is that you get a modern operating system on your Jornada, able to do everything your ordinary laptop/desktop can. You can chat, ftp, irc, download, play music.... And anything you lack can most likely be ported.
What is JLime? JLime is a project started 2003 by Kristoffer Ericson and Henk Brunstin aimed at bringing Linux to the HP handhelds. It stands for "Jornada Linux Mobility Edition". Henk brunstin left after 6months due to lack of time.
At that time there was no support for the 2.6 kernel on the Jornada and the only distro available was not actively developed since 2002.
But since then the Linux support for the Jornada has been greatly improved by the work of both JLime developers and other hackers (netbsd/linux-sh/openembedded).
What is a distribution, is JLime a distribution? A distribution is a set of linux packages put together by a group or individual aimed at a special purpose. The difference between different distributions is basically a matter of taste, some might like it clean, fast, easy to use or stable. JLime is intended to bring full power to your jornada while keeping it simple to use.
Are there many other HP Jornada Distributions? JLime is currently the only active distribution for HP Jornada 6xx (620/680/690) while there exists a few others for HP Jornada 7xx (720/728) and 8xx (820).
